 Impact of Pre-natal Substance Exposure on Child Attachment and Adjustment
  • Master updated information on the impact of pre-natal substance exposure on brain structure and functioning.
  • Learn how pre-natal substance exposure negatively impacts the development of a child’s “executive abilities.”
  • Understand how deficiencies in a child’s executive abilities adversely impact child-caregiver bonding.
  • Develop a basic understanding of infant-child attachment styles.
  • Understand how the quality of child-caregiver attachment impacts later relationships and increases the likelihood that the child will eventually abuse substances.
   
 Identifying Signs of ADHD Among Adult and Adolescent Substance Abuse Clients
  • Understand ADHD as a developmental disorder and how the disorder changes across the lifespan.
  • Become able to recognize the signs of probable ADHD among an adult substance abuse population.
  • Learn how ADHD adversely impacts the daily functioning of affected adults and dramatically increases the likelihood of abusing substances.
  • Recognize untreated adult ADHD as a serious risk factor for substance abuse relapse.
  • Explore important treatment issues among ADHD adults with co-occurring substance misuse.
   
Pharmacology of Addictions
  • Define addiction, addictive behavior, substance misuse and abuse, tolerance, withdrawal, and detoxification
  • Describe the neurophysiology of addiction
  •  Describe the major health complications of substance abuse
  •  Describe the management of patients with addictive behaviors
  • Describe how various kinds of drugs affect the body
  • Describe symptoms of a person high on drugs
  • Describe symptoms of withdrawal  

This workshop will help the participant gain understanding of the impact of addictive substance on individual’s lives.  By the end of the workshop participants will be able to identify how these substances effect the brain and  body.  They will be able to help client’s identify and manage withdrawal, and will be aware of some treatment strategies that can help clients cope with the effects of these substances.

   
Skill-building Through Activity-based Groups
  • To learn and develop an understanding of how experiential activities can enhance group learning
  • To provide opportunities to augment therapeutic toolbox with experiential activities
  • Discover ways to be creative in delivering group topics along with evidenced based  material  

This workshop will open the participant’s mind to innovative ways to treat client’s.   Participants will learn strategies that will help client’s gain self-awareness and move deeper into the recovery process.   This workshop is a “hands on” approach to treatment that is meant to get creative juices flowing and help treatment providers open the hearts and minds of their clients to a new way of life.  

       
The Speakers:    
Vicki Lay Vicki Ley is a licensed Mental Health Counselor who has worked in the counseling and addiction field for fifteen years as well as the Community Mental Health field for nine years. She is currently employed as the Director of Addiction Services for the Otis R. Bowen Center.  She has been recognized nationally and by the State as a certified Addiction Counselor, and currently serves on the IAAP certification committee.   Vicki completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice at Taylor University. From there she moved on to finish her Master’s degree in Counseling from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. Over the years she has had the opportunity to do presentations for agencies throughout Indiana in the areas of Motivational Interviewing, Stress Management, Teen Substance Abuse, Substance Abuse in the Workplace, and Treatment for Substance Abuse Populations.  Areas of expertise include her completion of training as an Intervention Specialist, and as a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy treatment provider.  She is also skilled at working with a wide variety of clients including trauma victims, co-occuring disorders, and personality disorders.
   
Dr. Rich Ruhrold Dr. Richard Ruhrold earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1986 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  He is a licensed psychologist in the State of Indiana.  Dr. Ruhrold is a National Board Certified Fellow in Clinical Hypnotherapy and is a Board designated trainer and supervisor in hypnotherapy.  His areas of specialization include resolution of abuse and other trauma, treatment of anxiety disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of seriously disordered youth. He is the founder and director of the Brief Therapy Training program at Bowen Center. Dr. Ruhrold currently serves as Senior Vice President for Clinical Services, Chief Psychologist and Clinical Director at the Bowen Center. Dr. Ruhrold has presented many workshops and at many conferences throughout the Midwest.  His work in the area of narrative therapy has been cited in the Family Therapy Networker.
   
Angela Semonis Angela C.R. Semonis MA LMHC MAC is a nationally certified counselor and licensed in the state of Indiana. She recently received her Master’s Addiction Counselor certification.  Angela leads group in the intensive outpatient program at Bowen Center, focusing her interventions with evidence based treatment as well as incorporating experiential activities to enhance client’s learning potential.  She has worked for Bowen Center for six years. Her experiences would include program development of the chemical dependency treatment program and art therapy.  She has also spoken in different venues, including the Indiana Counseling Association.
