Medical Necessity
This presentation will focus on medical necessity from both the payer and provider perspective. It will explore what medical necessity means, how to document it, and what types of diagnostic presentations can lead to a challenge in meeting medical necessity criteria. Treatment planning will be discussed in relation to medical necessity with a focus on assuring measurable outcomes and clearly defined interventions. Finally, documentation examples will also be provided allowing for audience participation in âdeterminingâ what does or does not meet medical necessity criteria.

Workshop Objectives
1. Ability to define medical necessity
2. Ability to identify critical areas of documentation to reflect medical necessity
3. Ability to understand critical areas of treatment planning related to medical necessity

About the Presenter:

Scott Migdole, LCSW , COO is the Chief Operating Officer of Yale Behavioral Health and is an Assistant
Clinical Professor in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine. Mr. Migdole
manages a broad array of behavioral health services for adolescents and adults, including
outpatient clinics, statewide juvenile detention mental health services, vocational rehabilitation
programming and crisis services.

Summary:

This training will dispel the myths of Domestic Abuse. The participants will receive information regarding the complex issues women experience surrounding Domestic Violence and Chemical Dependency issues. This training will also address the therapeutic approaches and implications surrounding this topic.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to role-play intervention strategies and assessment tool to utilize in their practice.
Participants will have an increased awareness of the profile of batterers, the power and control wheel, and the cycle of violence.
Participants will gain the knowledge of safety planning
Participants will become aware of what protective orders are, and how to link clients with the criminal justice system

For the past 36 years Laura has held various positions in agencies in her community. For the past 61/2 years, she has worked as a Program Director for the YWCA of St. Joseph County, directing the Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Legal Advocacy and Crisis Shelter programs. Prior to joining the YWCA, she worked as an âAt Risk Therapistâ providing crisis counseling and running Support Groups for high school students. Prior to that, she was a therapist for a private agency doing individual, family and marriage counseling.

Ivy Petra, MSW
Dual Treatment Counselor
YWCA of St. Joseph County

Ivy has worked four years in a residential setting with adults with chronic mental health disorders, many of whom also had substance abuse issues.
She has also been a DV advocate in a small, upstate New York DV shelter and one year as a DV advocate for the YWCA of St. Joseph County, and worked for two years as a Medicaid Service Coordinator working with adults with developmental disabilities, many of whom were also diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

Ivy earned her Masterâs in Social Work from Indiana University of South Bend in May of this year and was promoted to position of Dual Treatment Counselor at the YWCA where she has helped start and run a program that addresses DV and CD issues simultaneously.

2010 1st and 2nd Quarter Dates:
The ASPIN Supervisory Skills Certificate Program covers critical skills supervisors need to perform such as leadership, delegation, problem analysis, conflict, communication, teambuilding, effective supervision, and time management. The ASPIN Supervisory Skills Certificate is awarded upon completion of three full day sessions. Courses will be offered on the second Wednesday of the month from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. Classes will be held at the ASPIN Education Network office. Participants may register for individual days or for the full certificate program. Sessions can be taken out of sequence, and participants can begin the series with any session. Participants do not need to be in current supervisory roles but may attend as a preparatory step towards that goal. Class size is limited, and individuals must register at least five business days prior to training. Classes require a minimum of five participants.
