What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why

This seminar is presented in two parts:

The first part examines the development of serious juvenile and adult offending. We trace the development of offending over the life-course and then examine the criminal lifestyle. The criminal lifestyle is attractive to certain individuals and provides them with a clear identity, as well as cognitive structures that facilitate criminal behavior.

The second part then examines the current state of the art in interventions with offenders—both adolescents and adults. We will focus on why many programs do not reduce recidivism while some actually increase recidivism. Conversely, we will also examine in depth those programs that have been shown to reduce criminal offending.

· What are the developmental precursors to serious juvenile and adult offending?

· What does the criminal lifestyle look like and how does it function to facilitate criminal involvement?

· What works in intervening with at-risk youth, with adolescent offenders, and with adults?

· What doesn’t work, and more importantly, what contributes to reoffending?

About the Presenter
John Wright, Ph.D.
Professor Wright received his doctorate in 1996 from the Criminal Justice program at the University of Cincinnati. Afterwards, he served five years on the faculty at East Tennessee State University in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. He has published in leading criminal justice journals on topics that include life-course development of criminal offending, labor-market participation and crime, the impact of social support on offending, effective early intervention, and correctional policy.

Dr. Wright is a developmental criminologist whose work integrates findings from a number of disciplines, including human behavioral genetics, psychology, and biology. He is the cofounder of the Crime Adaptation Network, which includes a group of scholars from around the world who apply dynamic systems theory to crime and offending. He currently teaches life-course criminology and biosocial criminology at the undergraduate level and life-course criminology and juvenile justice at the graduate level.

Presenter:

Gina Lasky is a licensed psychologist who has been practicing in the public sector behavioral health system in Colorado for many years. As a psychologist, she has worked primarily with one of Colorado’s state psychiatric institutions working with individuals with serious mental illness who also engaged in aggression. Most recently, she was the director of behavioral health for a Community Mental health agency in Colorado that is moving towards a fully integrated healthcare model. A significant aspect of her work was to help the behavioral health staff develop an understanding of integrated care and to make changes in their practice. She has also worked as the behavioral health provider in a primary care clinic.

Learning Objectives— Participants will:

1. Be motivated to shift towards an integrated care mindset.

2. Understand why whole person care matters to them.

3. Know the context for the importance of physical health.

4. Know how to handle basic medical issues.

5. Increase comfort with ideas around how to work with Primary Care Providers.

6. Learn to use their skills differently and more broadly as integrated care becomes an important model of care.
