WORKSHOP INFORMATION:
Preparation/Training Required: Minimum Master’s level training in a
mental health field with completion of graduate level coursework in
Child Development, Child Psychopathology,
and Counseling Theory and Techniques. This workshop is appropriate
for mental health professionals with experience levels from
beginning to advanced. This workshop will fulfill
partial criteria for becoming a Registered Play Therapist with the
Association for Play Therapy, Inc. PlayJourneys, Inc. is an APT
Approved Provider # 04-142.

Summary:
Disruptive behavior is one of the main reasons children present for
mental health treatment. There are a variety of causes for
children’s disruptive behavior at home, school, and elsewhere. This
workshop will introduce a different way of looking at disruptive
children. Techniques and experiential exercises will be presented
to engage even the most resistant or oppositional children. Case
material is welcome and will be a focus of this workshop so that
attendees can walk away with new tools to reach their clients.
Learning Objectives:
Following the presentation, participants should be able to:
1) understand disruptive children in a different way;
2) identify at least five techniques to use with disruptive
children;
3) choose the most appropriate treatment for a disruptive child.

Presenter:
Patty Scanlon, MSW, LCSW, BCD,
RPT-S, graduated with a Masters in Social Work from Indiana
University in 1995. She has worked with children, adolescents,
adults, and families since 1992. She earned her Registered Play
Therapist – Supervisor credential in 2001. She specializes in
experiential therapies, using art, sandplay, and play therapy with
children, adolescents, and adults. Her professional experience
encompasses therapy with:
Child and adult survivors of trauma and abuse.
Children and adults adjusting to divorce.
Foster children with attachment issues.
Patty is past president of the Indiana Association for Play Therapy
and now chairs the Branch Relations Committee of the Association for
Play Therapy.
