Michael D. Yapko Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist I know you must get many e-mails and your time is valuable, so I will be brief and to the point. Then, if you’d like further information, you can read more of the details below. I’m writing to introduce to you my comprehensive training program in clinical hypnosis and strategic psychotherapy I will be conducting in Columbus, IN., beginning in March, 2009. The skills and methods you will learn in this program will generate some marked shifts in the work you do, expanding your clinical skills and adding the advantages of hypnosis to your goal-oriented treatments. The field of hypnosis has moved to the forefront of objective research in striving to understand subjective experience. High quality neuroscientific evidence for changes in the way the brain and mind interact offer compelling evidence that there is much more to hypnosis than meets the eye. As you will happily discover in this training, the old “hocus-pocus” days are long, long gone! Thus, this hypnosis training is probably much more diverse in its considerations and practical in its approaches than you might expect. If you are interested in learning the methods of hypnosis and strategic psychotherapy along with a small group of other professionals but you don’t want to read my detailed narrative below, please click on this direct link to my website for information about my three phase, 100-hour clinical hypnosis training program. You can view a short video there in which I describe the program, and you can download a detailed brochure or register on line: http://www.yapko.com/content/clinicians/100hourprogram.aspx If you have any trouble with this link, you can cut and paste it in the address bar of your browser or go to my website at www.yapko.com and click on “Clinicians” and then “100 Hour Hypnosis Training.” WANT MORE DETAIL? Read On… In this fast paced age we live in, it seems an obvious truth that some things simply cannot be hurried or instantly acquired. Clinical skills take years of education and training to evolve. So does good clinical judgment. Building on the foundation you have as a clinician, you can appreciate and obtain specialized training in the dynamic and fascinating methods of hypnosis. Unique Features of the Program This training has unique features I’d like to describe to you that sets it apart from other educational experiences you may have previously had. This is a three phase program which allows for skill development in two essential ways: Ample time for structured practice sessions during the training program, followed by a period of at least two months of taking the skills back to your clinical practice where you’ll get direct and instructive feedback from your own clients. When we meet in phases two and three, you’ll likely have success stories to share as well as deeper questions about things that would be helpful to learn more about. When you register, you are committing to attend all three phases. Another unique feature is the fixed nature of the group: No new people will be added as we go, so you will be with the same group of colleagues all the way through the training. In fact, the quality of the interaction in the training is the aspect of the experience that virtually everyone praises. The exchanges between group members are warm, supportive, and with a shared sense of purpose. It’s what you’d hope for in terms of an ideal learning environment. It helps a great deal that you’ll be in a program with other professionals, people who are clinicians like you who see the value of the things they learn through the lens of therapeutic effectiveness. In the most recent training that finished just a few weeks ago, the 22 attendees were unanimous in giving the program the top scores possible on the evaluation form. When do you ever get 22 people to be unanimous on anything? But, they were entirely together in rating this program as superb in every category, from administration to environment to content to structure. About the Instructor, Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D. Second, beyond the training itself, it is also valuable to have some information about who is teaching the course. You may or may not already know some things about me. I’d like to share some things you may not know that might interest you. I’ve had the good fortune in my lifetime to personally know and study with many of the elder statesmen of the field, too many of whom are no longer with us. All encouraged me in one way or another to develop my own style and methods, and to use my common sense. I have, and the result is a pragmatism that runs through my writings and teachings that resonates with people. I encourage the same quality of independence in people taking my trainings; I would want you to take what you learn and integrate it in ways that make sense for you, your values and your practice. Each of my books has been groundbreaking in one way or another simply because pragmatism leads me to explore things in ways that others more philosophically inclined tend not to do. One of the consistent pieces of feedback I am given about my work is that I make the information learnable and doable. I believe it’s why I’ve already been honored with two lifetime achievement awards from my professional colleagues in the hypnosis community (one from the International Society of Hypnosis and the other from The Milton H. Erickson Foundation). I have taken the mission of advancing the field of hypnosis most seriously, not just in the U.S., but around the world. I’ve had the privilege of teaching in 30 countries on six continents. My book Trancework is in its third edition and is the most widely used hypnosis text around the world. That’s gratifying, of course, and I think it highlights how important it is to people to have things clearly explained in non-magical terms. I strive to take the mystery out of hypnosis as much as current research (in such areas as cognition, learning, neuroscience and social psychology) allows us to. What it means to course participants is that what I’m teaching is empirically supported as well as clinically efficacious. Ultimately, the program focus is on improving treatment outcomes. By the way, you will be given a complimentary copy of Trancework on the first day of the program. The Program Environment and Course Tuition My wife Diane and I work together to make the environment as comfortable for participants as possible. We will be providing plenty of “creature comforts.” All day long the food tables will be amply supplied and I promise you, no one has ever left one of our training days hungry. We work from 9:00 to 5:30 on the first four days of each phase of the training and then end early on the last day of each phase at 2:00 so people can catch planes and trains as needed. Diane and I both understand and appreciate that this is a large commitment in terms of time and money. You can be assured we will do all we can to make it worth your while. The course tuition is $3000 ( only $200 per day for a small group intensive training limited to no more than 30 people). We require full payment by the first course meeting, but you can arrange to make payments between the time you register and the first course date instead of paying in one lump sum. It’s hard to put a price tag on the training and we can only tell you that previous participants indicated it was well worth it once they completed the training. A participant once enthusiastically shared with the whole group that the cost of tuition, hotel and flights were tangible expenses, but the value of learning from this training, the environment and people were “priceless.” I hope and expect that if you choose to join us in 2009, you will feel the same way at the end. Continuing Education and Hypnosis Certification From the continuing education perspective, you will receive 100 hours of continuing education credit towards your licensure if you’re a psychologist, or a California MFT or LCSW. Indiana usually has reciprocity with California, but you can check with your specific state agency to be sure you will receive the credit. You will receive all the education that is required by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) towards their certification should you wish to pursue it. You will also get a copy of my textbook, Trancework. The non-tangibles are different for everyone, but the sense of professional growth is fantastic (even for people with previous trainings and experience), the personal growth is usually a surprise for most, but occurs nonetheless, and there is professional networking with colleagues. Often, groups that have completed the training have formed their own list serves in order to stay connected. It’s wonderful to watch personal friendships develop. Dates and Further Information The 2009 program dates are: March 16-20 (Phase one); June 1-5 (Phase two); and, September 7-11(Phase three). Diane is the ideal person to speak to directly if you’d like some personal contact and have questions that I have not answered and are not in the complete brochure (which you can download from my website at this link http://www.yapko.com/content/clinicians/100hourprogram.aspx). If you have any trouble with the link, go to www.yapko.com, click on “clinicians” on the top navigation bar and then on “100 Hour Hypnosis Training.” Diane’s phone number and contact details are at this bottom of this letter. If you’re unable to join us in Indiana for this training, I want you to know that I will also be starting new programs in San Diego in April and Los Angeles in May. Please visit my website to download the brochure at this link http://www.yapko.com/content/clinicians/100hourprogram.aspx. Also, when you visit the website at www.yapko.com, you can sign up to be on my mailing list in order to receive the newsletter I put out approximately every couple of months which provides updated information about current studies and issues of relevance to therapy. Thanks for taking the time to read this letter. I hope it has been helpful and you will plan to join us in Columbus, San Diego or Los Angeles. Kind regards, Michael Yapko Contact: Diane Yapko
