Course Description:
This
presentation will introduce participants to general topic areas
related to dual diagnosis (DD/MI), including assessment, diagnosis,
and treatment for this population. A valuable textbook reference
to aide in the diagnosis and treatment of persons with a dual
diagnosis will be introduced: Diagnostic Manual--Intellectual
Disability (DM-ID), published by NADD Press/National Association for
the Dually Diagnosed. Consideration will be given to many types of
mental illness diagnostic categories related specifically to persons
who also have an intellectual and/or developmental disability.

Objectives:

Participants will be introduced to the DM-ID and how it can aide
in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of persons with a
dual diagnosis (DD/MI)

Participants will identify mental health screening tools most
appropriate for all levels of intellectual disability.

Participants will be introduced to treatment models for persons
with a dual diagnosis.
-
Participants will learn tips on avoiding chemical restraints
and/or information about chemical restraint
-
Participants will discuss medical issues such as seizures and
diabetes
-
Participants will discuss medication reduction: how fast before
you might see a change and how fast should these decreases in
medication occur
-
Participants will be introduced to medication evaluation and
adjustment
