PTSD Treatment and the Family

Summary:

Post-traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder that develops after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. Family members of victims also can develop the disorder. Depression, alcohol or other substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with PTSD and compound relationship dynamics and treatment. Speaker and author Briana S. Nelson Goff will discuss the following:

Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the basic elements of the impact of traumatic stress and PTSD on individuals, couples and family systems
  • Participants will be able to conceptualize trauma from a relational systems perspective
  • Participants will gain information about current research on traumatic stress in couple and family systems
  • Participants will gain information about conducting clinical work with traumatized and trauma-exposed relational systems
  • Participants will gain information on recognizing compassion fatigue and secondary trauma in professionals and helpers working with traumatized and trauma-exposed individuals and relational systems

They will be able to assess risks from the environment, staff, and clients, as well as develop a safety plan.
Participants understand the causes of workplace violence and necessary policies and procedures to address it in the form of a Workplace Violence Plan.
Violence prevention training for employees and management is seen as a fundamental step in effective risk management.
