Treatment of PTSD and Complex PTSD:

A lifespan perspective
Donald Meichenbaum, PhD
Thursday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The Brown County Inn
11 CEUs

Research indicates that 50% of psychiatric patients have a history of victimization that is often overlooked in assessment and treatment efforts. In addition, of the 1.6 million soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is estimated that some 300,000 returning Veterans have PTSD and co-morbid disorders of traumatic brain injuries, depression, substance abuse disorders and accompanying problems with anger, guilt, and complicated grief. They also evidence significant problems with transitions. This can take a significant toll on their families.

Dr. Meichenbaum will highlight the most recent developments in the treatment of individuals with PTSD and co-morbid problems. He will adopt a life-span perspective in order to demonstrate how to tailor interventions in both a developmentally and culturally-sensitive fashion. He will provide a Case Conceptualization Model that informs assessment and treatment decision-making and discuss the Core Tasks of Psychotherapy. He will provide a critique of the "state of the art" and then provide detailed, practical ways to conduct evidence-based trauma-focused interventions with victimized children, adolescents and adults (especially returning veterans and their families). He will also examine the ways to address the needs of clients with co-morbid disorders. The treatment approach is "strengths-based" and will highlight ways to bolster resilience by integrating spirituality into the therapy process.

Workshop Objectives:

As a result of attending this workshop the participant will be able to:

  • Employ a Case Conceptualization Model of risk and protective factors that helps to distinguish those who evidence chronic persistent PTSD (some 25%) versus those who evidence resilience or even "post-traumatic growth"
  • Identify the Core Tasks of Psychotherapy and learn practical ways to implement these tasks with victimized clients
  • Assess for PTSD and risk factors such as for suicidality which is a high risk in this population
  • Implement Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy and other forms of intervention in an integrative fashion
  • Anticipate potential barriers that can interfere with treatment and how these obstacles can be addressed
